HamHeung NengMyeon 함흥냉면 - Chain

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Hamheung Nengmyeon is an excellent little cold noodle place with several locations mostly in Bundang and Seoul.  The atmosphere in this place is similar to just any factory style Korean place where there is a whole lot of customer turnover.  It is not classy and it is not trashy.  It just looks like a normal place you'd go with your friends, your family or your company.  It is an all occasion generic type of place.

I have been to this restaurant several times and I have never been disappointed.  The food is consistently good and everything on the menu is high quality.  They are famous for their cold noodles which are excellent and for 500 won extra you can add a serving of jellyfish to them which is unique and adds a nice touch.  I also frequently get the dumpling soup which is also very good,

Ana Bunsik 아나분식 - Yeonnamdong Hongdae 홍대 연남동

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Ana Bunsik is a tiny little Korean style fast food restaurant that is located in Hongdae's Yeonnamdong.  I have seen this place several times but I had never had the chance to check it out.  I had imagined that it would just be like any other bunsik place and probably not all that good, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised by this place.  It is one of the better bunsik places in the area.

I was sick the day that I went to this place so for something easy on the stomach I ordered the kalbitang.  The broth was excellent and it came with some huge pieces of meat in it.  My friend ordered a roll of kimbap which was also delicious and unique in that they put the rice on the outside of the seaweed making it look a lot like Japanese sushi.  This was also absolutely delicious.  If you are looking for a cheap meal in the area, Ana Bunsik is a great place to try.

Juk Story 죽이야기

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Juk story is huge chain restaurant that serves rice porridge.  This place is almost exactly the same as Bonjuk which is one of the most famous rice porridge places in all of Korea.  The sides are exactly the same as at Bonjuk and consist of kimchi, squid, radish soup and beef.

There are a good amount of variety in terms of what different types of porridge you can order.  There are porridge that contain everything from mushrooms to meat to pumpkin to ginseng.  I ordered the mushroom porridge with sesame seed in it.  It tasted quite a bit like the one that is served at Bonjuk which means you can see visible pieces of soft rice in the juk and there are some really good ingredients used.  This place is a great alternative to Bonjuk and I actually probably enjoyed it a little bit more than Bonjuk.

Bbongip Sarang 뽕잎사랑 - Shabushabu in Sinchon 신촌

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Bbongip Sarang is a Shabushabu place that is located in Seoul's Sinchon district and is named after the leaf of a mulberry tree.  In this restaurant you can actually get all the tea made from mulberry leaves that you want for free which is kind of a cool addition to already really good restaurant.

This place is located in the basement on the main drag of Sinchon and the atmosphere is a family restaurant type of vibe.  This is a great place for groups, friends, dates or basically all occasions.

For those of you who do not know what shabushabu is, it is a huge pot of boiling broth that comes int he middle of the table and then you are given raw meat, vegetables and some other things to boil in the water.  It is like having a huge mix of boiled everything soup for dinner.  I have eaten at this place as well as several of the other Shabushabu places in the area, and I find this one to out class all the rest.  The broth is excellent and there are generous portions of meat, vegetables as well as rice cakes, dumplings and a few other things.  Upon finishing your meat and veggies, you can then make some noodles which come with the meal and after that you finish off with a rice porridge made from the remaining broth.

This place give you the full deal and the food is excellent.  This is why it is definitely one of my recommended restaurants in Sinchon and I frequent this place myself.

Jokbotong 족보통 - Hongdae 홍대

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Jokbotong is a jokbal and bossam place that I just stumbled across as I was looking for somewhere to eat.  I went here for lunch and as such had an item that was on their lunch menu and cannot be purchased in the evening.  It was the bossam jungshik which was very delicious indeed.

Probably the most impressive part about the entire meal was the quality of the meat.  I have never had bossam that tasted the way that it came out in this place in my life.  This place definitely had a really unique flavor and it was wonderful.  It felt as though it had perhaps been fried as well as boiled and while during the boil they definitely used a wide array of spices.

About five side dishes came out along side the meat, all of which were fantastic.  The kimchi was really sour which is something that I like a lot and there was another peppery anchovy dish as well.  Along with that came seaweed a leafy green vegetable and bean sprouts which are all pretty typical in Korea.  It came with two typical sauces to dip your meat in as well as the standard bossam kimchi that always come with bossam, lettuce and a dwenjang jjigae.  The jjigae was also really fantastic containing a ton of the bean paste and tofu.  It had a very strong flavor.

This place is really good and I recommend giving it a try for the unique flavor of the bossam alone.

Matjin 맛진 - Korean Food in Sinchon 신촌 한식

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Matjin is basically a small Korean fast food place that is located next to all the bars and restaurants in the middle of Sinchon.  It is a really small restaurant where you can go for some cheap and quick eats with pretty decent food.  They advertise that they have been open since 1991 which may not sound like a long time to a person from another country, but with the turn over of restaurants in this area of Sinchon that is actually quite impressive.

The food is pretty standard when compared to other similar types of restaurants, but there are not too many of these types of places left in the area.  I ordered the dolsot bibimbap which came with lots of fresh veggies, white rice and a good amount of gochujang (pepper paste).  It also came in a real dolsot, not those metal dishes that many places are using these days.  The sides that I were given were also pretty good.  I got a few different types of raddish, fish cakes, seaweed, egg and soup.

This place is cheap, quick and good and it is worth giving a try.

Pig Farm 피그팜 - Samgyupsal in Sinchon 신촌 삼겹살

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Pig Farm is a huge meat place that is located in Seoul's vibrant Sinchon district.  This place is usually packed and noisy and kind of has the atmosphere of a bar or place you might go out drinking with friends.  It is a bit dark inside and because of the quality and price it is always full.  If you come in the evening especially expect to have to wait to get a table at this restaurant.  That said, the food is great and it is a fun place to go with a group of friends.

The food in this place is cheap and excellent.  It is probably one of the cheapest samgyupsal restaurants in the entire area.  Starting at 17,000 won you can get a whopping 600 grams of meat which is absolutely enough for two.  Rice and Jjigae come at 1,000 won a piece on top of that which means two people can stuff themselves here for around 20,000 won.  Quite a reasonable price.

The meat is precooked before you receive it, but not all the way through so you need to cook it a bit more before you can eat it.  Due to the precooking it is quite quick to cook it though and the slices of samgyupsal here are thick which is just the way I like them.  It comes with scrambled eggs along with corn and cheese being cooked on the sides of the grill.  And for sides we got onions, garlic, kimchi, green onion, lettuce, and a variety of other things along with a few sauces.  The sauces were bean powder, ssamjang (a bean paste) and gochujang (a pepper paste).

The value at this place relative to the restaurants in the surrounding area is fantastic.  The food is excellent and cheap and the atmosphere is really cool as well.  I recommend this place highly for a Friday night before going out the party with your friends.

Ou 오우 - Korean Place in Hongdae's Yeonnamdong 홍대연남동에 있는 한식집

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Ou is a very modern and clean Korean place that is located in Hongdae's vibrant Yeonnamdong.  This place advertises itself as the healthy Korean food place which based upon my assessment of their food is not far from the truth.  All of the food contained a lot of fresh vegetables and it seemed that the food was prepared extremely delicately.

The quality of the food in this place was not questionable.  You could tell that real care is put into making this food come out so well.  The rice is cooked to perfection, the meat is marinated perfectly and the sides are all absolutely delicious.  There was not one thing on the plate that was not excellent and there was a wide variety of vegetables as well.  The sides included mushrooms and various vegetables as well as the standard radish, etc. that you get everywhere.

The quality in this place is absolutely amazing, but the only issue is that the portions are not enormous which is something to keep in mind if you are very hungry.  We all had to order a second round on sides (which is free and the restaurant obliged), but it seemed the consensus was we could have gone for thirds which we did not ask for.  I did leave having eaten an adequate amount of food, but I definitely could have eaten more as well.

Jangchungwang Jokbal Bossam 장충왕족발보쌈 - Sinchon 신촌

Check out My Youtube Channel!

Jangchungwang Jokbal Bossam is a great restaurant located in Seoul's vibrant Sinchon district.  There are a ton of bossam and jokbal places scattered throughout the area and all of them have a little bit of different taste and feel, but I think this is one of the better ones and I'd like to explain why.

There is one other bossam place located in the area that I had already recommended on this blog and that place has more of a homemade type of atmosphere.  I would say that Jangchungwang Jokbal Bossam is not exactly the homemade type of atmosphere, but is much more similar to the type of bossam that you might expect at any large bossam chain place.

That being said, it is still flavored excellently.  Bossam is a piece of pork belly that has been boiled in water with a ton a spices and all different types of flavors then cut and served which makes it appear like a piece of steamed meat.  It is also served with two different types of kimchi that specific to bossam places.  In addition this comes with some excellent ssamjang, a mix of onions and other vegetables as well as a dwenjang jjigae.  The jjigae in this place is heavy on the dwenjang which is the way that I like it and another part of the reason why I enjoy this place over others.  The other sides like the kimchi are also very crisp and fresh which is the way I like it.

There are several dishes to try at this place and I have tried a few of them.  They have jokbal as is stated in the name as well as a kimchi jjigae that is absolutely excellent.  This is the type of place that Koreans would go after a night of drinking to recover.  The stew is sour and thick with loads of kimchi and meat.  I highly recommend trying this if you are like this type of thing.

Finally this is a restaurant for all occasions.  The interior looks like a very standard large chain type of place without any type of specific feel making it acceptable to just about anyone and for any type of occasion.  They are open extremely late as well, so you can come for dinner or in the middle of night when you are out drinking with friends.

Korean Food Buffet at Igane Hof 한식뷔페 이가네 호프 - Sinchon 신촌

The name of this restaurant is Igane Hof because in the evenings it is a Korean style hof bar where you can go to drink beer, but at lunch time this place is a Korean food buffet.  This is a place I discovered very recently and today was the first time that I actually got to go and try the food and I was pleasantly surprised.  I wish I had known about this place a long time ago.

The two things that make this place such a hidden gem is the fact that the food is good and healthy combined with the price being so low.  This is an all you can eat buffet for only 5000 won, one of the lowest prices I have ever seen for an all you can eat buffet.

Not surprisingly, this place is quite popular and you will see a ton of Korean people walking in and out all the time while you are eating your food.  There are a ton of different sides at this place.  I am not exactly sure how much things change from day to day, but the time that I went there, there was a plate of fish, spinach, bean spouts, kimchi, japchae (a noodle dish), dduk (rice cakes), salad, squid, radish, seaweed and other things as well.  There were two different types of rice, one which included black rice and the other was barley rice.  There was a soup that was made from dwenjang (a Korean fermented bean paste similar to Japanese miso) and seaweed, noodles and jaeyuk which is a spicy pork dish.

This is an immense amount of food which includes tons of different types of vegetables, various grains, fish and meat.  I was really surprised to see all of this at such a low price.  All the food seemed to be fresh and good quality as well.  There is a girl and her mother there constantly cooking, refilling things and washing the dishes the whole time you are eating.

This is one of my new favorites in Sinchon and I will for sure be eating here quite often from now on.

Wangno 왕노 - Hanu in Yatap Bundang 본당 야탑 한우집

I have been working in Bundang near Yatap station for about the past year and so I have tried just about every single restaurant in the area.  There is one that has a lunch menu that trumps just about every other lunch menu in the area and that restaurant is of course Wangno.

The entire staff in this place is super friendly and the owner always greets by name and with a smile as I walk into this place.  This place is always super crowded around lunch time and despite it being quite big, there is still sometimes even a line.  The place has the atmosphere of a large busy and bustling restaurant, but is still clean and classy.  It is the type of place you might go with your coworkers during your lunch break.

Every single item on the lunch menu is fantastic in every way imaginable.  The food is excellent, it comes with tons of sides and the price is right as well.  I have tried everything on the menu and I have never been disappointed, but there are a few items that I would like to highlight.  The gugbap is some of the best I have ever had.  It comes with generous portions of hanu and is filled with fresh vegetables.  This is one of my favorite items.

Another great item is the dwenjangjjigae which also comes with generous portions of hanu making it stand out from other places that I have gone that serve a similar dish.  If you end up going with multiple people one of the best things to order is the jaeyuk.  This pork dish is unlimited refill at Wangno and they will also bring you as much salad (쌈/ssam) as you want.  It is covered in a delicious sauce that can sometimes be very spicy but it is not overpowering here at Wangno.

Also there are usually about six sides that come with anything that you order.  All of which are usually fresh vegetables.  Some times I have an issue with too much pepper which is a complaint that I often have in Korean restaurants particularly in Seoul.  However, Wangno's veggies are usually so fresh that it makes up for excessive use of peppers if it is indeed a day that there are many peppers are used.  Often times extremely good sides are made here including things like jeon (Korean pancakes), odeng (fish cakes) or real fish.

Wangno is actually a hanu place that serves meat, but as I have only ever eaten lunch at this place, I have no idea was the meat is like.  Since the lunch menu is so good I'd still recommend giving it a try and I'd like to myself if I had the opportunity.

Hanyangwang Jokbal 한양왕족발 - Bossam and Jokbal in Sinchon 신촌

I hadn't been to Hanyangwang Jokbal in quite some time, but I finally went back to this place with a friend and I must say that this very well may be my favorite bossam and jokbal place in Sinchon.  They definitely prepare things in a different manner than a lot of the other major chain and larger places and add their own unique twist on the food.

The atmosphere in this place is a bit like a pojangmacha place which means that it is open with concrete floors.  It seems like the type of place you might go on a hwesik with your company or out on a Friday night of drinking with a Korean crowd.  It would be a great place to have some soju with your friends but it is generally not that loud so it could also be treated like a family restaurant.

I have never actually ordered anything in this place apart from the bossam because I actually prefer it to jokbal.  For those of you who are new to Korea, bossam is a pork dish where the fatty part of the pork belly is boiled with a variety of spices.  It is essentially the same thing as samgyupsal (BBQed pork belly) but it is a lot lighter because of the fact that it is boiled rather than grilled.  Jokbal is pigs feet.  It is also quite tasty, but as I said I tend to prefer bossam and most jokbal places offer both dishes.

This place gives much more of a homemade type of feel in comparison to a lot of the larger jokbal and bossam places that I have been to.  The bossam is also served on a bed of buchu which is a Korean leek like vegetable and the sides are a bit different than most other places.  Anyone who has eaten bossam knows that it comes with a side of particular type of kimchi.  In fact there are two.  The one that is made out of what I believe is radish is quite normal here, but the cabbage kimchi is the freshest kimchi I have ever seen almost making me wonder if it is even fermented at all.

They also brought us a side of yukhwe (raw beef) which was a nice touch and something else that they serve at this restaurant as well as a side of kyeranjjim which is a boiled egg dish that is really salty and goes well with soju.  The sides are all really nice, but the thing that stands out the most in this restaurant is the different way in which the meat is prepared.  It is finished with sesame seeds which adds a nice touch and the cut of meat is more meat and less fat heavy than your typical bossam place.

I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes bossam or is just interested in trying out some new Korean places in Sinchon.

Palsaek Samgyupsal 팔색삼겹살 - Chain Meat Restaurant

Palsaek Samgyeopsal is a big chain meat restaurant that you can find various locations of around Seoul.  This is among my favorites of the big chain samgyeopsal places in the Seoul area, because of the food quality, atmosphere and price.

The thing that makes Palsaek Samgyeopsal stand out among the heaps of other meat places in Seoul is the fact that all of the samgyeopsal is marinated.  In Korean, "Palsaek" means eight colors and so the main set that you can order at this places comes with eight different flavored varieties of pork belly (samgyeopsal).  The flavors that they offer include ginseng, wine, pine leaf, garlic, herb, curry, dwenjang (a bean paste similar to Japanese miso) and gochujang (a Korean pepper paste).

My personal favorites have got to be the curry, pine leaf and wine.  Usually I am not a huge fan of gochujang as I feel that I am eating too much of it as it is, but the gochujang flavored meat that is offered at this restaurant is one of my favorites as well.  Although these ones in particular stand out, every single flavor that they offer is delicious.

In addition to this, they also bring out a large plate of soup (jeonggeol) on the side of this huge meat fest.  There used to be only one flavor and that was the seafood stew, but now they offer a choice of three different types.  I have only ever had the original seafood soup which is delicious, but now they also offer kimchijjigae and a shellfish stew as well.  In addition to all of this, they bring out a lot of fresh veggies and a salad which is something that I really appreciate as many vegetables of pickled in other restaurants, and they also grill kimchi, bean sprouts and mushrooms along with the meat.

The atmosphere in this place is that of a large and clean meat place and it would be good for any occasion that grilling meat is acceptable.  It is nice inside which makes it great for work or dates, but it is also a barbecue place which makes it also work for a Friday night out with friends.
