Uchonkalbi is my favorite Korean restaurant in all of Sinchon out of all the places that serve simple Korean meals. There menu is not all that extensive, and I have actually never had the barbecue at this place, but my are their simple dishes tasty.
The staff in this place is extremely friendly, even a little bit too friendly at times. They will help you will everything and try to engage you in conversation probably several times while you are eating if the place is not busy. They are a married couple and both of them are very nice and enthusiastic. The atmosphere is much like a family restaurant and the building almost seems like a house.
I have tried nearly everything on the menu at this place besides the barbecue and everything is absolutely exquisite. One of the best parts about this place is whatever you order comes with about twelve side dishes and all of them are all different kinds of various vegetables. There are kimchied and fresh vegetables along with occasionally some seafood dishes as sides.
As far as the main dishes go, their bibimbab comes with extremely fresh vegetables and is one of my favorite dishes. It comes with a side of jjigae which is a nice touch because everyone likes to have a soup with their meal. The bulgogi is definitely different than any other bulgogi that I have ever had, so sometimes Koreans don't like it because it is not what they are expecting. The meat is sliced very thinly and there are not many vegetables in it, but despite that it comes with a delicious broth and meat. Finally, their self proclaimed best dish is the kalbitang. It is excellently made with two different types of meat in it, one that has a bone and one that is thinly cut. It also comes with a generous portion of ginseng and a date. I also recommend the kalibitang as it is a great dish when you want some soup. Another thing that makes this place special is that all of the food items come with whole grain black rice.
This is absolutely the best simple Korean restaurant in the area and you are missing out on one of the best restaurants in Sinchon if you never visit Uchonkalbi.
