Beer O'Clock - Sinchon

Beer O'Clock is probably the best Western style pizza place in Sinchon.  They have a variety of different types of pizzas on the menu, and I have tried several of them and never been disappointed.  All of the pizzas have a good flavor and are generous portions.  One thing that is not so great about Beer O'Clock is it is a bit expensive for a single meal.

Beer O'Clock has an american sports bar type of atmosphere.  Whenever I go there, I really feel like I am in America for better or for worse.  There are usually not too many people there and the people who work there are all super nice.  This is a cool place for any Americans who miss a bit of home.

My Secret Mate - Sinchon

There are loads of different types of special cafes spread around in Korea.  My Secret Mate is puzzle cafe.  How it works is you go in and order a drink.  You get to complete a free 150 piece puzzle while you enjoy your drink.  I have been here finished the first puzzle and asked for a second and they allowed us to do two.  Also they have people doing larger puzzles, but I am not exactly sure how doing the bigger ones works as I have never done any of them.

This is a really fun place if you enjoy puzzles.  I feel like this is a great spot to go a rainy day date.  Also unlike a lot of these other special cafes, My Secret Mate actually makes some pretty good drinks as well.  I have had the Hoji Tea Latte which is absolutely excellent and I have also tried the Lassi on a number of occasions which I also enjoyed.

Braai Republic - Itaewon

Braai Republic is a South African restaurant in Itaewon with a bar atmosphere.  They make some excellent food at this place.  Their menu includes lamb shank, sausages which are ground at the restaurant, stews and meat pies.  All of the items of the menu are fantastic and most of them come with sides which are also delicious.  Some of the sides include cream of spinach, mashed potatoes, polenta and coleslaw.

Braai Republic is super popular so going there on a weekend night is going mean you will probably have to wait a long time to get in.  They also have specials during the week which makes going during the week even more feasible.  The last thing I would like to add about this place is their deserts are also top notch.  The cheesecake is absolutely wonderful.

I highly recommend this place.  I think it is one of the best western restaurants in all of Seoul.

Rye Post - Itaewon

Rye Post is great sandwich place located in Itaewon.  It is right near the station and they make some excellent sandwiches.  I highly recommend anyone to go here if they are craving a little bit of that taste of home.

I have tried several of their sandwiches, but my usual go-tos are the Philly cheese steak sandwich and the ban mi.  Rye Post makes their own bread which is of great quality,  and the ingredients in the sandwiches are absolutely excellent.  The Philly cheese steak sandwich is filled with cheese, and I think this is the only ban mi place in all of Korea that I thought made a good one.

Check out Rye Post the next time you are in Itaewon, you will not regret it.

Gamamarui (가마마루이) - Sinchon

Gamamarui is a ramen place in Sinchon that I feel is much better than all of the other ramen places that I have tried in the area.  The broth at this place is absolutely amazing, the noodles are spot on, and the meat and other ingredients are excellent.  This place is authentic and delicious, and I recommend it highly.

There is one problem with Gamamrui though.  The size is not large at all.  If you eat a lot, you may not be satisfied with the portions.  The quality of the food however is excellent.

My friend and I ordered two different types of ramen and we tried both the thick and the thin broth.  Both were excellent.  If you go to this place, you will not be disappointed.

Drink Fun Fun - Sinchon

Drink Fun Fun is a crepe place in Sinchon that makes some very sweet and delicious crepes.  This is only a place you could ever think of going for desert, and it is only somewhere you want to go if you want something that is ridiculously sweet.  They know how to pile on the sugar at this place.

I had the Oreo Crepe.  It came with cheesecake, ice cream and whipped cream.  It also had Nutella, Oreo Cookies and chocolate Syrup as well.  This is one of the greatest sweetfests I've ever had in my life, and I recommend this place for when you really need some extreme candy.

Ping Pong Cafe - Sinchon

In Korea there are all kinds of specialty cafes, rooms and other types of establishments where you can play games or do some other special activity.  There is a place right next to Sinchon Station where you can play Ping Pong in an indoor room.  It costs 5,000 won for two people for half an hour and 8,000 won for two people for one hour.  They offer special types of discounts for groups of four people.

This is a really nice place.  There is not much to say about it apart from that.  It is a large room with several ping pong tables and they have a variety of different kinds of rackets.  When you enter they give you a ball and then you can go play.  You pay by the time you were there when you leave.  This is a great spot to go with friends or on a date.

This is a cool place to go if you want to do something different.  These places are all over the place in Korea so if you live in a different area you can probably find one near your house as well.

Directions: Walk out Sinchon Station exit 3 and it is a block and half down on your right.  It is in the same building with Cafe To The Different on the fourth floor.

Love Indoor Fishing Cafe - Gaebong

Love is an indoor fishing cafe that is close to Gaebong Station.  This is an extremely fun and unique cafe, and the people who work here are extremely nice.  If you want something different and interesting to do, I highly recommending giving love a try.

This place seems to be quite popular.  I don't know if this is normal, but when I went I had to wait about an hour before I was able to fish.  There is a huge pool in the middle of the cafe, and people are sitting all around it.  They give you a fishing pole and some bait when you are ready to start.

They give you instructions on how to fish, it may be helpful to have a Korean speaker here, but it doesn't seem essential if you know the basics of fishing.  Then you being fishing.  There are so many fish in the pool, that your bait gets eaten basically as soon as you drop it in the water.  You have to try to pull the fish out almost immediately.

The hooks are not that strong so it is a bit difficult to catch a fish, especially at first.  To be honest I was getting a little frustrated when I first got there because it was so difficult.  Once I got the hang of it, it got a lot easier.  In the end, I caught about five fish and my friend caught a similar number.  We were fishing for about an hour and half which literally flew by.

If you catch a fish you have to get it in a net, then take the hook out of it.  Then you put it on a scale that weighs the fish.  You are wearing a wristband that adds up your total number of points that you earned based upon all the fish that you caught.  In order to earn points, the fish must weigh more a certain amount of weight.

When you are leaving the cafe, you receive a prize based upon the number of points you earned.  I won some hand cream.

This place is not that cheap, it costs 10,000 per an hour, and time flies by, so it is easy to stay longer than you think.  That being said it is a lot of fun and definitely worth a try.

This is an incredibly unique cafe, and I highly recommend giving it a try.

Directions: Exit Gaebong Station exit 2.  Go to the end of the road and make a right at the T intersection.  Go to the big road and make a left at the light.  Make your first right and it is a few blocks down on the right (about one or two blocks after the school).

Choco Blossom - Sinchon

A friend took me to Choco Blossom the other day and I really enjoyed the dessert that I had while I was there.  At this place every patron is required to order a drink as well as a dessert, so going here is a little bit pricey if you want to have the dessert.  However, the dessert and the drink were both excellent.

I had an apple tart that comes with unlimited custard that you can mix into it.  The only thing that I wished was that it was bigger.  The taste of it was incredible.  The crumbly bread that was on top of it was fantastic, and anybody who likes apple pie or apple crisps will love the favor of this dish.  The lemonade was also extremely sweet and sour, also quite good.

This Apple Custard is absolutely amazing, and I recommend going to this place just for that.  I haven't tried anything else, but the other dessert may be equally as good.

The atmosphere in this place is also pretty cool, they have some high up seats with beds on them where you can lay down.  It seems like a nice place for a date.

To The Different - Sinchon

To The Different is a brand new cafe that opened up in Sinchon just recently.  It is extremely close to the station, which makes me a bit worried that this place will not be around forever, but for as long as it is they make some pretty good desserts.

We had the roll cake and the cheesecake.  The roll cake was good, but I would not be writing the blog post based upon it.  The cheesecake was a step above most of the other cafes in the area and is what got them onto my blog.  If you like cheesecake, it is definitely worth giving this place a try.  I would like to go back and try some of their other desserts as well.

Unfortunately I did not try much of anything else in this place including the drinks so I cannot comment on how good or bad they are.

Hielo - Sinchon

Hielo is a cute little cafe in Sinchon that has a nice atmosphere.  There is mostly indoor seating, but they also have one table that is outside on a terrace.  The atmosphere is quite nice in this place, it is both a good place for a date and a good place to study.  I have not been disappointed by anything that I have ordered in this place.  Everything they make is of high quality.

They are most famous for their bingsu, which comes in two sizes.  One is a normal sized bingsu, but for 3,000 won more you can get the big size, which is humongous.  They have several different flavors, and the flakes are made with a good deal of sweetened condensed milk so it is extremely sweet.  They also give you as much sweetened condensed milk as you want on the side.  If you ever want more all you have to do ask.

I have also tried a few of their drinks, including the blueberry shake.  I thought the drinks were also very good.  Everything that you order comes with a piece of chocolate that is really thick.  It is almost fudge like and is also very good.

Hielo is a cool cafe that I recommend anyone living in the area to give a try.

Directions: Go out Sinchon exit 1.  Make your third right (just before IBK Bank).  Hielo is on the left about three blocks down (after the school).
